We each have a lens through which we view the world. This lens is comprised of our upbringing, race, sexual identity, gender, beliefs, environment, etc. Progressive society’s inclinations towards empathy are strong yet our ability to step outside of ourselves and into the shoes of others is highly debatable. However, if a voluntary Freaky Friday situation were to take place what would those first moments feel like?

Lens Therapy was a shared experience and interactive installation that dove into mind-bending visual and textural manipulations. Lens Therapy was created by Colleen RJC Bratton for the Outer Space art series. An accompanying publication features writings by Justen Siyuan Waterhouse, Anna Kryczka, Cam LaFlam, Tiffany Owens, Ilana Zweschi, Gretchen Bennett, Lauren Ashley Moore, Theresa Endoso, & Chelsea Werner-Jatzke. Lens Therapy invited anyone to join the interactive installation.

Lens Therapy was coordinated by Outer Space: an art series that is nowhere and everywhere. Artists are selected to create a temporary installation for a place significant to them. Once the piece is installed, they have an opening for the show, lasting between three and five hours, then the piece is removed, giving the space back to what it was before we arrived.
Sometimes it is cold and monsooning, sometimes it is dry and windless. Every time it feels new, every time it feels significant.

Bratton contacted nine writers (Justen Siyuan Waterhouse, Anna Kryczka, Lauren Ashley Moore, Tiffany Owens, Cam LaFlam, Ilana Zweschi, Gretchen Frances Bennett, Theresa Endoso, & Chelsea Werner-Jatzke) to respond to the nine colors on the front of the Lens Therapy quilt. Writers were encouraged to respond to notions of color and perspective.
